Again and again we hear statistics like, 97% of all online marketers fail. 90 – 95% of people online make no money at all (or less than $1000 total). If there is any truth to these numbers, then I would guess that many people who read this are not making much money online. They might be asking the question “Is it really possible to make money online?”
The obvious answer to the question is, yes. It is possible to make money online, and with some training, there are huge amounts of money to be made.
The problem with statistics is that there are always many ways of looking at them. For example, no one compares this with the drop-out rate to become a doctor. And, undoubtedly that drop-out percentage would soar if you included all people who dreamed about being a doctor, but never had any training.
In online marketing every one can give it a try – with or without training or aptitude. For my attempt to lower that failure rate, I would like to share some advice on how you can make money online.
1. You Need a List
There is no way to get around this. I started trying to sell things by using traffic exchanges and safelists – this was all I knew. With enough work, I might get a smattering of responses, but it was never enough to try to make a living.
When you hear people say that they tried a certain product and within a couple of weeks they made $50,000, it is usually because they already had a list to mail to (or they’re stretching the truth). Your list is your marketplace. You will never succeed without one.
2. You Need Training
Some people cross over from some other sales position like realty or insurance. They can have an advantage because of their experience. The average person who has no sales experience needs to learn something about the psychology of sales, how to understand people’s needs and how to fulfill that need. Just wandering around trying a program and then another, will probably make you poor, but it is a form of training. A better way to do it is to find a mentor or an expert who is free with their information. Behind every successful online marketer you will usually find another marketer who has walked them through some of the early stages.
3. You Need Time
You don’t need ten years of university, but you are not likely to be successful as an online marketer with just 3 – 4 months of trying. You need time to learn and grow in your understanding of this new business. You need time to build your list. You need time to build your brand and to build the trust factor so that people will believe you. Be prepared to commit for the long haul – not just until the first failure.
4. You Need Passion
This goes right along with the previous point. You will never get through the failures and periods of time when there is no income, unless you are passionate about what you are doing. You need to have a goal or a vision of what you want to become. Keep that firmly in mind as you keep pushing through the difficult times. The good times will come. You need your passion to get through the bad times.
To help you work through the first two points, I recommend a training system called 3 Steps to Profits. I cannot speak highly enough about the quality of this system. It also starts you on the road to building your list and your income. Click the link to see the introductory video.
If you are just starting out, a good place to start is by getting the book, Magnetic Sponsoring. This teaches the core of online marketing. There is a one-time fee, but you can make that back by selling the book to others – a good way to get started.
I am willing to mentor any who join through either of the above tools.
